Softness Beckons in Florence

This is Part II of my Tuscany series…  also read Part I and Part III

When my mother and I ventured on a trip to Tuscany through Rome and then Florence, we really had no idea what to expect. Other than movies, we were really relying on our own senses and each moment to take us there.  Our time in Rome was typically touristy, and so I will not write about it here. By the time we got to Florence we were relieved by the artistic ambience, slower pace and charming architecture. The Lady I will call Florence slowly lured us in and gave us our cue we were truly in a different world…

In one night we met our group, those we would be travelling with to our Tuscan village. For now, we would be content to walk the cobblestone streets, cross the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge over the Arno river with its dizzying array of jewellery and gifts, and be embraced by Renaissance culture, including live music and spontaneous artwork outside the Uffizi.

My heart slowed down a bit and began to relax, though I had difficulty sleeping that night from all the stimulation. We were preparing for our last and most important leg of the journey… Tuscany at its most fine and pure…

Santari surprises Krista at the Florence bus station

After arranging our tickets and waiting an inordinate amount of time at the bus terminal, I was thrilled to be surprised by one of my favourite global and cosmic friends, Santari Green, who came to assure us that our time in Tuscany would soon be upon us…

Smiles could not express how happy and excited we were to soon be there!

We finally boarded the bus to Barberino Val D’Elsa, near to our villa of La Chiara di Prumiano. My very skin diffused into calm as I watched the hillsides blossom before us and the sun tilt over and into the trees, tall Cypress and olive groves. When I saw the small Madonna and the sign to our new abode, I did not anticipate the feeling. A sense of coming home…

As we pulled into the lane, my heart would burst. Being welcomed felt like we had been away a long, long time, and had finally returned to our ancient playground and mystical retreat from the world.  After seeing our room and exploring the villa, it was already dinner time.  I could not believe where we were eating outside in the rose garden overlooking the great hills of the estate. The sun made its final visit over the estate wall and called us out to cheer as it turned the roses and stone walls an extraordinary pinkish red, including our elated faces.  I had not expected such explicit uncontainable joy!

Thank you mother Tuscany, and our new Tuscan family! I thought.

We will be coming home again soon.

Tuscany Calls

This is Part I in Krista’s Tuscany Journey writing series. See also Part II and Part III coming soon…

Last year, in the cold of winter, just like this (February), I got a call from a friend who works in a similar field as me: transformation, spirituality, yoga, wellness, creativity. Her name is Cezarina Trone. We had worked together on her radio show, Quantum Creativity, with her co-host Santari Green, where we danced in conversation and delight several times and gave me my start spreading inspiration online. Now, Cezarina was calling for another reason. I had been sitting contemplating my next moves, and feeling the downside of winter upon me, when she mentioned the word….

Tuscany”

Now I had never been anywhere truly European or exotic for that matter. I had travelled quite extensively down south, in the States, Canada, and the UK.  But Italy? That was something other people do. And the image that popped into my mind was, of course, the romantic and beautifully raw Diane Lane, in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, newly divorced and being coaxed by her all-knowing best friends to take a trip to the Tuscan countryside and begin anew.

And that she did. But me? I had been through my own emotional universe, and was Tuscany my way to the other side of happiness?

Cezarina told me she had written a book, a children’s book, and sent me the link. I didn’t know what to think of it – for one thing, it was so small on the screen, the thumbnail made it hard to read the title. So I enlarged it and there it was…

Krista Caterpillar Goes to Tuscany

My mouth dropped open as I realized what it said….

“Krista Caterpillar Goes to TUSCANY!”

She told me she got a burst of inspiration and knew she had to use my name. Krista Caterpillar goes to Tuscany, and turns into Beatrice Butterfly. That is when I knew.

First, I cried.  Then, I wrote back immediately with a big, fat: “YESS!!”
